The  ancient art of papercutting

Where does the art come from:

The art of paper cutting in China may date back to the second century CE, since paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China.

As paper became more affordable, paper cutting became one of the most important types of Chinese folk art.

What is papercutting?

Papercutting is the art form of cutting paper with sharp scissors or a knife. It can be as simple or intricate as the paper artist chooses.

It has definitely stood the test of time and will continue to be a popular art form amongst many cultures.

Many famous paper artists of the past still inspire current paper cutting practises.

ABOUT ME

Papercutting starts with the first cut

Florence studied art at Die Kruin High school of art.

She is a Struisbaai based artist and works mainly with paper. She uses traditional papercutting techniques to create her artworks. Her work is inspired by the natural world and the things she encounters in the world around her. The medium she used over the years was mostly drawings and painting, but in 2016 she started experimenting with papercutting.

Her paper cut works are hand cut from a single sheet of paper. They are first drawn out by hand on the reverse of the paper, and then cut with a scalpel.

They can take hours to complete and she finds that the process is just as important as the finished pieces. The simplicity of a blank sheet of paper appeals to her.

She says:" Paper is used in so many aspects of our lives, and I want to communicate this through my work. There is nothing as ordinary as a blank sheet of paper, but it has so many possibilities and can be turned into something beautiful or meaningful, without adding anything to it."
